Here are five takeaways from a Review of the August 2020 Harris County (TX) Voter Registration Roll:

NON-SPANISH, NON-ASIAN SURNAME REGISTERED VOTERS CONTINUE TO AGE OUT OF THE VOTER ROLL

If one looks at the percentages for registered voters that are eighty years old or older and consider that the National Center for Health Statistics show that U.S.Life Expectancy at Birth by State and Census Tract is 78.8 years in Texas, the data indicates that 8 of 10 of the registered voters that are aging out of the Harris County Voter Roll do not have a Spanish or Asian surnames.

THE YOUNGER THE ELECTORATE, THE BIGGER SHARE OF SPANISH SURNAME REGISTERED VOTERS

If one looks at the percent for registered voters that are 18 to 24 years old, the data indicates that Spanish surnames account for 36% of the registered voters in that category. If one considers that 59.7% of the registered voters do not have a Spanish or Asian surname and that African American comprise about 22.5% of the citizen voting age population in Harris County according to the American Community Survey 2014-2018 Population Estimates, it also suggests that persons with Spanish-surnames are the plurality of the registered voter in the 18-24 age group.

PERSONS WITH A SPANISH AND ASIAN SURNAME ACCOUNT FOR 4 OF 10 OF THE 18-24 YEAR OLD REGISTERED VOTERS IN HARRIS COUNTY

If one looks at the percent for registered voters that are 18 to 24 years old, the data indicates that persons with a Spanish and Asian surname account for 40.3% of the registered voters that are 18 to 24 years old.

LATINOS MAY HAVE QUIETLY PASSED AFRICAN AMERICANS TO BECOME THE SECOND LARGEST GROUP OF REGISTERED VOTERS IN HARRIS COUNTY

If one considers that the American Community Survey 2014-2018 Population Estimates place the African American citizen voting age population at 598,090 (22.5%) in Harris County and Latinos at 774,160 (29.1%), and that persons with a Spanish-surname currently total 558,244 on the voter registration roll, Latinos may now be second largest group of registered voter in Harris County, next to Whites.

MILLENNIALS AND GENERATION Z ACCOUNT FOR 4 OF 10 OF THE REGISTERED VOTERS IN HARRIS COUNTY

If one looks at the percentages for registered voters that were born in 1981 to 2002, the data indicates that, generation-wise, Millennials and Generation Z account for 4 of 10 of the registered voters in Harris County.
